The Contemplation and The Calling

"The LORD will fulfill His purpose for me; Your love, O LORD, endures forever— do not abandon the works of Your hands" Psalm 138:8

Something within me wants to respond. (I'm at the Community Conference and it's the second night. Saturday, the 28th of June) I miss hearing what the altar call is for (having been in the ladies room after holding out during the teaching) but feel a longing to hear God speak to me through the prayer of another person.

Standing before the front row, I utter silently to God "Again Lord, I ask that the person who prays for me doesn't nudge me to enquire my request but simply lets You lead...I just want to hear You" *tap, tap* (I feel a hand on my shoulder and open my eyes) "Hi", she whispers, leaning my way, "Can I pray for you...do you have any specific prayer requests?" (An inviting yet slightly awkward smile rests upon her face as she looks at me) "Aiyah, God!" (I proclaim in my head) "Erm, actually, I didn't have a specific reason for stepping out of my seat and coming here...I just wanted to respond...yeah, no specific request...err...erm...yeah...heh...hmmm..." I fumble for words and end up rambling in a silly fashion. "Oh, ok...that's ok, I'll just pray for you..."

She prays quietly and after a couple of seconds I start to think she must be desperately seeking God for a word. I feel a little guilty. A few more seconds later and I'm apologising to God for having that thought as I'm underestimating her. She is willing to avail herself as a leader and I believe God is pleased with her soft heart towards Him and all He desires in her life...She'll hear Him. I sense God humbling me with the reminder that He speaks through anyone who walks in His ways, not just those I think are really mature in their faith and have mastered the art of being sensitive to His voice. Maybe I'm a little embarrassed that I'm seeking prayer but not being specific. Maybe I'm thinking I should be praying for others instead, as I'm a leader and it's in a way my responsibility...ok, not so much responsibility but that I really should be putting the needs of others before mine. I should be walking in His ways and hearing Him and building others up with His words as I allow Him to minister through me. I'm passively chastising myself. I fall silent. I wait. I listen. A little more quiet praying on her part and then she speaks directly to me.

God tells her that He's placing a heart for the community within me. She sees me as a peacemaker. As one who desires to reconcile people when conflicts arise. She says something along the lines of me seeing potential conflict or spotting when something is amiss before it blows up and wanting to bring peace to the situation. She prays for God to do His will and His work in me.

Mind you, she barely knows me. And this has never been a topic between God and me, or at least I don't recall us talking about it. So it was kind of fascinating to hear her say these things. I thank God for speaking through her and for her being a blessing by praying for me so sincerely.

I've not really seen myself this way, to be honest. But somehow it made sense when she described the picture she saw of me. As in, this is what I want to be, I don't want to be the person who brings dissension into the church, who sows discord by planting seeds of doubt in peoples' minds about one another, who whispers human judgement disguised in concerned prayers or sharing of another. I don't want to be that person. I want to be the person who pursues and creates unity. I want to be changed. I want to be made pure in thought, holy in deed. I am lacking. I need God. Lots.

It's Sunday and I respond again. This time, I have something to request. And yes, I get asked again.

Sitting in the teaching, God challenges me again to step out of my comfort zone. To break out of my stagnant lifestyle, the safe shell of a life I have created for myself. 9 years in this church and I have succeeded in remaining within this comfortable community, with the "perfectly justifiable reason" that I am committed to God's work within the boundaries of the church; i.e. I use my ministries as a cover up for not being overly involved in the who and what outside. It's allowed me to hide my growing fears from the people I know and commune with. Little do they realise I am escaping from the world, sinking further into the mindset that I can spend my life within the confines of this supportive family and it would be ok. I plead with God to have nothing change. It doesn't work that way. He wants me out in the world, reaching the very people I have come to judge, despise and shun like the plague out of fear and lack of understanding. I feel overwhelmed and want to remain in this familiar, secure environment.

God wants me to start small, do something a little different, but something easy. I tell Him it's hard. I raise my case again about all the horrors I see in society today and how frightened I am. "All I'm asking is that you buy a cake, step out of your house and knock on the next door". "Oh God, what if they reject me? what if they yank the cake out of my hands and slam the door in my face? what if they throw it back into my face? what if they hate me for the colour of my skin or persecute me when they discover my beliefs? what if..." "It's just a cake. You're just going to say hello and introduce yourself and explain you've just moved into the neighbourhood, that's it...that's all for the first step".

I try very hard to envision Fab and myself developing friendships with the neighbours, getting involved in community activities to promote neighbourhood safety like keeping watch over the kids as they cross the roads near our house after school, getting involved in picnics and things...who knows what they organise, I'm just going off things I see on TV. I struggle to picture this amidst fears of people hating me and breaking into the house and violating me, of random people walking around the neighbourhood drunk hurting others (part of the fence outside our estate was vandalised and destroyed not too long ago by some delinquents). I worry for Fab and I worry for us and I just worry. Always. "Just trust me!" God tugs. I respond to the altar call and ask to be prayed over for faith...to start something in my neighbourhood. To finally step out and get to know people outside of the church and my workplace (that wasn't scary at all! my colleagues turned out to be absolutely wonderful people! all thanks to God!)

She assures me that God wants to pour His love for people into my heart and that as I respond to Him, this love will overflow and take over the fear that now resides.

There is hope. I need to hold onto Him, draw closer to Him, gain deeper understanding and insight into His heart.

God, I thank You. Really.

For my family, for my friends, for the life I have had and completely get to enjoy at present still, for my church back home, for this church, for my job, my colleagues, for everything. You have provided, protected, delivered, shown grace and patience, forgiven, blessed. And blessed. And blessed.

Thank You. Truly. Thank You.

More to See - Hillsong

Never took great notice of this song except that Fab pointed out he liked the music and I agreed that it was musically appealing and sounded happy...well, I took a closer look at the lyrics and they're fantastic! When you let the words sink in, you realise how uplifting this song is...it reminds us that it is not by our own strength or might that we are made able, and it challenges us to look beyond our present circumstances and our past to a God whose mercies are new every day. A God who has a future in store for us that is filled with hope and purpose!

Well I know that I may have had
My share of failing and falling
But I have come to understand
One thing remains

By all He’s done
I have been made holy
Worthy of serving the One
The One who wrote eternity
So deep in my heart

Open your eyes and see
The wonder of a life
So wonderfully free
Lift up your head believe
There is more
There’s so much more to see

You remind me still
Of the hope and promise
Daring my heart to be brave
And all the while You strengthen me
So deep in my heart

His mercies are new every morning
His mercies are new every day
His mercies are new every morning
Beautifully new every day

Lift up your eyes and see
Lift up your eyes and see
Lift up your eyes and see
Lift up your eyes and see

another day in bed

Didn't go in to work today...down with the flu...nicely dosed up on Codral Day and Night. The day formula is supposed to be non-drowsy but somehow I started feeling really groggy and floaty like I was gently rocking to and fro and so I drifted off to sleep while attempting to read "Out of Control and Loving it" by Lisa Bevere. I've finished "Unleashing Your Potential" by Christine Caine. Loved it! They both write in ways that are clear and direct. And Christine's side comments provide entertainment as I sit imagining the humorous situations she's in. I relate to her writing and would probably take on a similar style should I ever venture to write a book but it would depend on the topic too. The plumber is here as the ancient hot water tank downstairs has finally been given the boot. Yen has asked for him to change the kitchen taps to a lever-mixer as the 'cold' one has been suffering from incontinence and leaking water all over the sink. Well, hopefully this will mean no more freezing cold showers in the morning, yay!

Before I get too side-tracked

Ashley Weis. I said I'd post about her. Ashley is a Christian writer from America. I came across an article by her on 'Ungrind' and it cut deep in my heart. This is going to be a very long post so please bear with me. I decided to write to her, half expecting I wouldn't hear back because I'm this complete stranger from half-way across the world and she would have a lot on her plate. But she did reply, and what a reply it was. I've taken out the main paragraphs as an encouragement to those who struggle with 'beauty' as much as I do. I hope you will take time to read through this as it carries God's empowering truth about our identity. I want to thank Ashley for this. It's amazing to see how God has been working in and through her life and that of her husband's and how their lives and relationship have grown (it'd make more sense if you viewed her website).

"I guess my husband could say that because he liked other qualities at the time. He had a skewed view of beauty. In his eyes, darker eyes, bigger lips, smaller chest, all those things and more were “more beautiful.” In reality, I think he meant “sexier.” But either way, in comparison, there will always be another woman more beautiful than me. I’m unfair to myself when I think otherwise. However, beauty should not be just outward appearance. A woman can be stunningly attractive and yet my husband should (and now does) consider me the most beautiful. Because I am his bride. That alone puts me above everyone else.

I can relate to you. I’ve had tons of insecurities. Although they didn’t truly formulate until about a year before I met my husband. I met a few guys along the way who were very image-driven. “Change your make-up” … “Your teeth need to be whiter” …. “Your clothes aren't stylish enough.” Things like that were often said to me and they really got me down. When I met my husband he was very much into fashion and I’m just not. So I struggled a lot.

Still do. We were at Friendly’s last night and walked by a table where a pretty girl was sitting that I know is more beautiful than me. But here’s the thing. Just like my husband can look, realize he saw something pretty, then choose to look away and think positively… I can too. I can choose to say, “Oh, there’s a pretty girl, but I’m not going to compare, I’m not going to think she’s more beautiful, and I’m not going to over analyze the fact that my husband just saw her.”

That’s what I did last night. It wasn’t easy, but I just kept thinking about how much I love my husband. I set my thoughts on pure thoughts, not destructive ones.

One thing you have to remember is that we do have an active enemy, very active. For women and men this image, beauty, sex-driven world is a big struggle that most people don’t know how to deal with. They brush it off as not a big deal. Marriages agree to have celebrity crushes. It’s stupid.

We’re called to holiness. To a pure mind and heart. For us ladies, this stuff is just as much of a struggle, if not more! We compare ourselves all the time. This is one thing that helps me to realize I’m beautiful: If every woman in the world vanished and I was the only woman who existed, I’d be the most beautiful woman in the world.

It’s true. I would be. But it’s sad. Because I’m only saying that because no one else would exist to compare myself to. Your husband should see you that way. As the only woman in “his world.” And you should see yourself that way too. As the only woman in his world.

Only recently have George and I gone a few months without a huge argument and emotional storm in my heart. God is leading me. I feel beautiful, but not in the world’s standards. In God’s. Seeking that kind of beauty has made all the difference. And my husband agrees.

A woman striving for beauty is not beautiful. Because she already is beauty. She just needs to rest in who she is and be confident in God’s design. A woman at rest with her beauty is truly beautiful. A woman at rest with God. With herself. With her husband.

I wish George could promise me that I’m the most beautiful woman in the world too. But it’s just an unfair expectation, like you said. I mean think about it… we know we aren’t, so why should we expect them to think we are?

I guess we need to remember that we (women) are more focused on our appearance than our husbands. They care. I mean—they want to be attracted to us, just like we want to be attracted to them. But we are the ones that compare ourselves to other women. Naturally, men don’t do that. If they find another woman attractive, they don’t compare. They find women attractive separately, kind of like God does. My husband would probably think you are pretty, but at the same time he would think I am pretty. And if he saw you and thought, “Hey, that’s a pretty girl,” he wouldn’t immediately think, “Wow, her hair is better than my wife’s.”

That’s how we think. We see a pretty girl and think, “Wow, that’s better than mine.” It’s our jealous, covetous nature. It’s sin on our part. Just like lust is a sin on our husband’s part. We need to keep that in check just as much as we want our husbands to keep their lust in check. Submitting every thought to Christ as it comes. “Wow, her eyes are pretty” should stay at that and not go into jealous thoughts.

This world makes it so hard to be comfortable in our own skin. Commercials, advertisements, billboards, malls, tanning salons, even Christian magazines advertise “be a better you.” Women are never seen without make-up and lighting and touch-ups on the covers of our favorite Christian magazines. It’s no worse than the latest Redbook cover, if you ask me. The world tells us, “You need something else to be beautiful” because they want us to buy their products and spend our money trying to look better and feel better about ourselves.

God has another plan that few women discover and traverse. He says, “Find rest in who you are. Don’t look to the world. Look to me. You don’t even need that blush to be beautiful. You already are. You don’t need a flat stomach. You are beautiful. Rest in what my heart fashioned and my hands created. Rest in YOU.”

It sounds nice, but it’s hard to believe. We have arrows attacking us every day. Which is why I try to stray from places that I know will haunt me. Like blockbuster or the mall. We don’t even have a television (of course there are more reasons that that) I don’t want to be fed the world’s view of beauty. I want to be fed God’s view. The more I revel in His view of EVERYTHING, the more I feel beautiful and can rest knowing that I wouldn’t want to be a superficial kind of beautiful anyway.

Women who are focused on their appearance too much are not at rest. You can tell. They look every other woman up and down to see what they’re wearing. They compare. They shop constantly. And their hearts are empty. No matter how much they strive for beauty, they don’t feel beautiful. It’s because they’re looking in the wrong places.

I am pregnant right now with my second. I got pregnant again when my daughter was 8 months old. So… my body has not been the sexiest since I married my husband. :o) I got pregnant right away, and once my body sort of got back to normal, we got pregnant again. Sometimes I feel like I want to use birth control to “control” when we have kids because I’m afraid of ruining my body. Think about that. When I think about that I want to cry for myself. It sounds so pitiful. I want to stop having children because I don’t want to lose my worldly sex appeal.

But God helps me through it. I feel sexy even when I’m pregnant, because sexiness is more than what the world makes it seem. It’s a confidence in who you are. And some days I have pretty bad days, but God has really healed and helped me feel beautiful in ways I never imagined.

I know what you mean about worrying. I did that a lot, and sometimes still do. But just remember that “someone” (eh, em… satan) is against your marriage. The greatest weapon he has is fear. Fear keeps us from a lot of things. But God can overcome that. He can shower you with peace. You will only find that in Him. Your husband can and should make you feel beautiful. He should value your beauty over any other woman’s beauty. But that doesn’t mean another woman will not be “worldly” more beautiful in his eyes. But there is a beauty you, his wife, have that no other woman in the world has and could ever have. It’s a beauty that goes way beyond looks. And it will last while your old and gray, and yes, pregnant. :o)

Try not to listen to the world. It will only haunt you, destroy you, and make you feel like you are always lacking something. You are not lacking anything. You have the King of Kings, which is all you need, and He says, “There is no one like you. You are beautiful.”

Don’t compare. Turn those thoughts to Christ immediately. Rest. You are beautiful. I went to your blog and I’ll make sure to stop by often. :o) You have nothing to worry about. You are in God’s hands"

Rest in God

Psalm 91 verse 1 says "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty" and yes, this refers to women too. Although I may not be the most active person, or the most task oriented, for that matter, resting in God is something I find really difficult. Oh! By the way, thank you Cherri for your encouragement! Can't wait to see you in August!

On Thursday night, the Joseph One and Two women got together for a special night of impartation by our very own Pastor Lailing. Although Pastor Lailing sees herself as an ordinary woman with an extraordinary God, to us, she is a power woman and a super mum with the way she leads her life and her family of three young and vibrant children, along with ministry and supporting her husband which, given his great responsibilities as our senior pastor, is no easy feat at all.

Pastor Lailing shared about the Destiny of a Woman, reminding us that, as it says in Psalm 139: 13-16, we are made marvellously by the Master Designer with a unique and great purpose! She reaffirmed what the Word says of our identity, our hope and our future. We just need to learn to believe the Word, to claim it as truth and allow God to transform us from the inside out. It's imperative to accept that God never sees us as an accident, as useless or unacceptable and so we need not strive for his acceptance and love. We are significant simply because we are His masterpieces. In Him we find ourselves and we are made whole. God has a wonderful and specific purpose for each of us whether we are single or married.

After her sharing, she prayed for us...she did not stop to ask about what we were going through but simply allowed God to guide her as she interceded. As she prayed for me, she felt God showing her that I need to be set free from the stronghold of my mind, that I've been going in circles for a very long time with thoughts constantly bothering me. She saw me struggling and even trying to prove myself worthy of love. She reassured me of God's deep love enveloping me and that He wants to heal me and has already begun the restoration process. She uttered the word "Rest" several times and encouraged me to give God my trust once again. Pastor Lailing does not know what I've been battling with all these years yet she spoke right to the core of my daily struggle. God has not forgotten me and to Him I am beautiful. It's hard to believe it many a times but I want to. I want to be free, to be whole, to be able to bring His truth to the lives of broken women. Pastor Lailing felt God assuring me that as I rest in Him, He will bring about something in and through my life. She challenged me to physically imagine myself hitting the 'stop' button on the tape recorder of nagging negative thoughts and throw the tape away. She told me to fill my mind with the Word of God instead, that it may eventually drown out the thoughts that attack me so ferociously and cause me to live in constant fear and insecurity.

If you struggle with recurring thoughts that bring doubt into your mind and cause you to live further into a shell and perhaps even in a world of 'fantasy' that you create as a way to escape, I want to encourage you to step out with me and embrace the truth that we are fearless fighters in God! This won't be easy and it most likely will take time but pursuing freedom is so much better than cowering in the dark and crying ourselves to sleep.

Bride-zilla

I saw '27 Dresses' (I like Katherine Heigl with James Marsden) the other night, with my DVD-buddy Serene, in her cosy one-room apartment inhabited by her and her very fluffy cat. Started thinking to myself in the car on the way home as Fab called during the movie and somehow we had a bit of a misunderstanding about a car and the conversation ended rather curtly. I thought back to all the times things have not been the best between us and again it occurred to me that I'm often the cause or the one who ends up making a bit of a mess of everything with my emotions and self centredness. It's weird but though he's just wonderful, it's as if I'm never completely satisfied and always hone in on some totally insignificant, trivial, stupid thing. Wow, my vocabulary has dropped to like zero in this post. Notice my lack of proper descriptive terms.

Anyhow, it all made me think of how I'm so much like all those selfish, horrible characters in movies...the ones I hate and scold while watching the movie and holding back tears as I get so involved in the story and lives of fictional people. In this case, I likened myself to the yucky brat of a little sister to the female protagonist. She wants everything her way and is oblivious to others' needs and how her self-absorbed ways are actually hurting the very people she claims to love. That's just the icing of it all...it would take me a good 20 posts to finish describing myself as reflected by the many film characters. Maybe I'm exaggerating but it just goes to show how self obsessed I am.

It is just amazing how God could still love and bless me the way He has all these years. Why am I not so helplessly grateful? I thank Him but I'm not appreciative and thankful enough. I thank Him the one minute and complain the next. It's like nothing is ever good enough or just enough for me. I need a head and heart transplant, stat! Pronto! Now! Did I ever mention I'm impatient too? Golly...what a bad combination...my poor long suffering Fab.

My brain works in a twisted vicious cycle. First I'm discontented so then I make a fuss and say and do things I shouldn't...I grieve God and hurt Fab...then I go into self-induced guilt mode and get frustrated over my nonsense and try to make up for things by being really nice but then sometimes I get so upset with myself that it ends up on Fab and he's left feeling very lost and tries to comfort me. Where would I be without God? Seriously...I'd be a goner if I weren't His work-in-progress! There are times I honestly think I've lost the plot and deserve to be in a loony bin. It really shouldn't be so complicated though, right? It's all about the daily renewing of our minds.

How do people who don't know the truth cope? Some people are so strong minded, so strong willed but at the end of the day, though they may be so mature and well-adjusted and have overcome and moved on and become successful, nothing counts without God in the centre of the picture. People think I believe in God because I am weak and that they don't need Him as they can depend on themselves. I wish I could say something but saying something in prayer to God is more powerful. I need to believe in that. Trust Him. For every crazy negative thing my 'mind' tries to convince me of.

This is crazy!

We've reached Location 17! So much has happened so fast that I haven't kept up with reading about the different places and countries since location 4! I also haven't been that good about keeping the 10,000 steps target everyday. Personal best. 14, 000. Personal worst. I think it was about 3,500 although I am convinced something was wrong with my pedometer that week as I was out and about when my parents came over for 5 days with two other couples (close family friends) so I could try my gown.

They made it way too big! What was the point in measuring me so carefully on two occassions if they were going to make it two sizes too big as if my boobs were the size of massive papayas?! Ok, nevermind that...hopefully the alteration will go well...the gown for the night reception in Singapore was alright except I can't breathe deeply in it due to the in-built corset like feature. Ah well, at least it'll help hold Bert (my belly) in. Sigh, it seems to be a known-tradition that the bride never gets to eat at her own wedding. So anyway, the hotel we're having the dinner at in Singapore has very kindly arranged for supper to be provided in our room once guests have retired for the night. Yay!

OK, back to the pedometer...it acts up every now and then, or rather fails to act every now and then as I've been recording an inconsistent number of steps though I take the same route every morning to work. It's been behaving today so we should be right.

On the subject of so much having happened, I've now forgotten all those wonderful posts I had in mind to blog about. All these great ideas that generated in my mind since my last entry...poems, stories, personal insight. Oh well...moving on then...
