God has blessed us so much, Fab, and I'm grateful for having had you by my side for almost 12 years now since we met in 2001 and became best buds. Thank you for the beautiful bouquet and sweet card you surprised me with too :) Here's to a long lifetime of more wonderful and banga years together!

Eating in Kuching

With Nick,
Miin and
Fab

I could barely digest my food by this stage of our trip. The stomach flu or whatever bug I contracted took over so I ate very little and most of what I did eat, I had trouble keeping down. Still, it was good to be with Fab's family. His mum very sweetly packed tissues, plastic bags and sour plum candies in my handbag as we headed out to the airport. She was very empathetic, which really touched my heart.

[Recent blog interest]

I've been faithfully following Elsie Larson's blog A Beautiful Mess ever since I chanced upon photos of her wedding on Hello Lucky (via Style Me Pretty - under the "For Weddings" list in the right column). Elsie reminds me of Zooey Deschanel in some photos. Whatever it is, they're both beautiful and talented, and I love Elsie's blog! The way her wedding was styled makes my heart skip and some of the photos on her site make me swoon with delight and day dream. Such is the way of happy things.

Oh whoops! Correction: I first saw a photo of Elsie and Jeremy's wedding on Making It Lovely.

Now onto food. I. HAVE. TO. MAKE. THIS. It's not an option, it just has to be done. Yes, one of those things in life. Mmm, berry crispy goodness...Thank You God for winter and the food we get to eat because of it.

Mr Then

Was thinking to write a post appreciating my permanent room mate, and noticed the verse on Biblegateway is Ephesians 5: 25-26 - “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her...". That's Fab. The husband who loves fully and sacrificially.

Fab's a strong constant in my life. He's patient, stable, trustworthy and gives great cuddles. It doesn't bother him I like climbing into his lap for hugs and smothering his adorable face with kisses while making strange cooing sounds or speaking in gibberish. He tries very hard to understand his crazy wife and gives in to her many requests, being ever willing to baby her. Fab's been an incredible support during this frustrating journey and I know I couldn't have taken a step in a new direction if I didn't have him by my side.

He makes me laugh with his many expressions and cute antics that allow us to get up to silly nonsense when no one is looking. I love that he becomes more of a kid around me and is free to do birdie dances before brushing his teeth. He lets me nag him to wash his feet every night and set other "house rules" I adopted from my growing years. He also very sweetly warms my side of the bed during colder months, like a friendly giant hot water bottle who's nice to snuggle up to.

Fab's the one who sits beside me when I'm sick - to pray, tuck me under a blanket and provide medical attention. He cooks if ever I don't feel like doing so, and irons the shirt he wants to wear for the day every work-morning. He sings upon request and voluntarily does a jig if the right music is on in the car.

People sometimes ask how I knew Fab was the one and I would say, "There were two big clues. One, I wasn't self conscious around him for long, and found he was the only person I could just be (totally) myself with. And two, my parents warmed to him very quickly. In fact, he's the only friend my dad has ever asked about and allowed to drive my car." What was also important for me was to be accepted by his family, so when they gave the "all-ok", that was a big deal.

It's been ten years since I met Mr Then, and I am so grateful God brought this 'square' engineer into my life. We may struggle at times to communicate, with me processing in noodles and him reasoning within the compartments of a waffle-like grid fitted with neat electrical connections, but I know he's here to bring some form of balance in my life. A different sort of practicality.

He's been very good about my pushing him to open up, and letting me into his mind and heart. I'm weird like that. When someone is this close in how much they matter, I want them to get everything about me and to want me to know everything about them. I want to know. Everything about them, that is. I want us to be intertwined; a part of each other. I want to know what makes them tick, how they think, how they feel about things, what pushes their buttons, what makes their blood boil, what excites them, what gives them safety, security and fulfilment. And I want them to want to know these things about me.

Fab lets me dig deep though he doesn't always know how to respond or expose his 'insides' any further. My demands stretch him yet he willingly offers to accommodate my desires. Sometimes I wish this all happened more naturally but I've been told it's only natural there be some figuring out, adjustment and effort involved. I guess it keeps the relationship fun - discovering more of each other with time while learning to speak each other's love language. I'm really glad he's sticking around for life. Fab's definitely a companion I don't want to lose.

Hey, could someone get me this?

My Father's Daughter

I can't remember what the other ones that I wanted were...hmm...

Thanks Yen for pointing out I forgot the link! (I've placed it under the photo) Bahahaha...I'm just being silly by the way about asking someone to get this for me...but it's her cookbook. I love cookbooks where the author tells a little about their family story. I've come across a few I really like but can't remember who they're by any more. Sigh

I don't know about this

Yes, I do like the combination of sweet and salty and yes, I would go for a plate of pancakes with maple syrup and bacon on the side...but I'm not sure if I want ice-cream with bacon bits in it. Maybe I do...

Photos of friends and food to come...have heaps of laundry to get through and the house is in need of a clean!  Back to the office tomorrow. Oh, I didn't take photos of the food at Sushi Burger but probably because we were too busy gobbling everything up. It was the real deal - owned, managed, cooked and served by lovely Japanese people.

Far from home...

By I Love Doodle via Oh, Hello Friend

Gosh, there are just so many dining places in Singapore I never knew existed; it seems almost preposterous and laughable that I've only ever been to a handful of areas in the country I was born and raised. Such is the life of a lazy creature of habit who does not think to wander beyond what is familiar and seemingly common. When will I ever have the chance to visit some of these gorgeous little cafes and restaurants, some of which are hidden in four-storey buildings that one would not think to look over twice due to outer appearances. It is only thanks to blogs I've chanced upon that I should become aware of such treasures.

Koko Black, Royal Arcade Melbourne City

We finally tasted the goodness of cocoa that is in Koko Black after hearing reviews of their "liquid gold". Though the Autumn Spoil for Two looked pretty minuscule when it arrived, it certainly was enough due to the richness of each sweet morsel. I liked the mousse the best and the hot chocolates did live up to the claims. Mine was the regular version while Fab tried the one infused with Chai.

And since I have been getting numerous comments and questions about Fab's weight, here is my blanket statement: Yes, he has lost a lot of weight, reason being he has been conscious about his size and shape and has thus controlled his food portions and kept active with exercise and tennis with friends. He wanted to bust the trend of men getting a little flabby after marrying and settling down into a comfortable routine, plus he has a secret dream of owning tight abs and toned muscles. I personally prefer he not feel like a skeleton or a concrete slab when hugged.

You may choose to believe he has shed the pounds due to the stress of supporting an unemployed wife and a mortgage, or from his wife's inability to cook or cook enough. This is entirely up to you as I cannot be bothered to refute such arguments. Please just refrain from approaching me with your shock, blunt remarks or concerned expressions. You are perfectly welcome to ask Fab for a reasonable explanation. Thank you.

These Embroided book covers

I wonder if this is the same story as the film I saw many years ago

Related to Neil and Sandra's Wedding...well, sort of

In between the ceremony and the dinner

Mango sago with mango at a dessert shop in Sunnybank Plaza (I don't recall the name)

Fab had a spoonful and decided nothing beats the Taiwanese desserts in Sydney's Chinatown. With the current warm weather, I'm craving for more icy sweet treats from that side of town (This other place is in Market Square). I like the cakes at Casamia Paris Patisserie in Sunnybank Hills as well but they're rather pricey. A great deal of effort is put into taste and presentation though. (The photos on the linked site are a slight misrepresentation as the person brought the cakes home, hence the white plate with blue trimming and the shoe rack in the distance)

Taipei Exchange

I like the concept of this movie. It also got me dreaming again about owning a stationery/book/cafe type place with lots of cute and pretty things that make me happy. A store with great lighting and cosy sofas and beautiful wall decals and super yummy drinks and desserts like Tiramisu, New York Baked Cheesecake, Chocolate Eclairs, Berry Tarts, Chiffons, Danish Pastries, Souffles, Brownies and Creme Brulee (most of which are sold in Daughter's Cafe, which still stands after it was created for the film). You can view photos of the cafe's interior here. I like the open-plan kitchen design and the colour scheme.

What Doris (the main character) said in the movie inspires me to travel more to create my own stories to share with others, stories about the experiences I've had...instead of living vicariously through others (their photos, their adventures).

Beautiful, Beautiful Day!

[Cue song: Beautiful Day by U2]

Perfect weather, gorgeous white sandy beach, the clearest water...bliss. Fab and I had lunch at Grill'd  on Marine Parade, along Coolangatta beach. The burgers (mine being the "Hot Mama" and Fab's "The Full Minty") were super yum! If I ever bake a bunch of potato chips (or fries, if you prefer), I'm definitely going to sprinkle them with dried rosemary and sea salt.

I went prancing in the cool water and dragged Fab along because it was just too wonderful to resist. It didn't matter my three-quarter grey pants were getting drenched, I was too taken in. We sat on giant rocks to dry and stare into the amazing expanse of blue, green, aqua and turquoise, watching the white swirls and majestic waves breaking as they rushed towards the shore, carrying a string of skilled surfers sporting a bronze tan. One guy's board broke in half, which probably signalled it was time for him to just swim or head home.

It's a pity I didn't have my camera with me and I can't find a photo on the web that does the scenery justice.
Fab made pork chops for dinner, Jamie Oliver style. We have one of his cookbooks, courtesy of Belle who gifted it on my birthday a couple of years ago. Delicious! Fab glazed them with honey and mustard and served them with apple sauce and garlic beans. He even made some crackling.
