It's things like this

That remind me of God's goodness

  • On New Year's Eve, I posted a package to my sister and her family in Hong Kong, using the exact address she gave me. The package consisted of a book, her favourite Victoria Secret's moisturising lotion (that had been ordered and flown over with a friend's friend from America), a Crabtree and Evelyn travel toiletries pack and clothes for my nephews (one a t-shirt with his favourite cartoon character, another a wetsuit for the little swimmer). When it did not make its way to them after a couple of months, my heart sank and my sister started wondering if someone else was enjoying the lotion as much as she would. I changed my prayer from "Lord, please have it delivered to them safely" to "Lord, I hope it went to a family that will be blessed by the contents and that it wasn't stolen by a postman on the sly out to make a quick buck on E-Bay". Well, weeks passed and lo and behold! Mr "by-now-all-squashed-and-wrinkled-I-have-seen-better-days" Package showed up on my doorstep. Literally. We came home one day and there he was leaning against our front door! Yay! Thank you God! Nevermind the postage costs. You have returned a package I took ages to put together because I wanted to get things they'd really like.

  • Travelling everyday through peak hour traffic and having an ongoing virus (it's been making its rounds through our whole office) that makes me increasingly tired and wakes me up in the middle of the night with a really itchy ear and gives me body aches and puffy glands, can take its toll. And sometimes this means I go into ultra scatter brain mode. I already am an absent minded person. So anyway, we decided to top up on LPG one morning on the way to work so I pulled into a gas station and Fab proceeded to get out of the passenger seat to fill the tank up. I thought, "maybe I will be good and clean the windows" so I climbed out and headed towards the cleaning apparatuses. Fab looked at me and kind of made a slight 'clearing-throat' sound and glanced at the car. "Oh, right! Sorry..." said I as I reached to the side of the driver's seat to unlock the compartment for him to refuel the car. I then carried on with my window wiping, all the while thinking I was doing a famously good job. Fab went inside to make the payment and came out with chocolate milk for me. Yum. "You look tired, I'll drive", offered my wonderful husband. "Ok" I replied and jumped into the car. "Erm, Jos, did you forget to turn off the engine while I was topping up on fuel?" Oops. We thanked God for not letting us both blow up with the car (and the whole petrol station full of commuters for that matter).

  • When a colleague opened up about being in an abusive relationship and the extent to which she was trapped in the marriage because of lies her husband had told and debt he had incurred which she had lost most of her life savings paying off, as well as connections he had from a dark past that were never revealed and several other complicated matters, I became worried. I even asked people from church to pray for her during our prayer meeting. Well, today she informed me that her citizenship application is going very smoothly and what should have taken at least 6 months to even get looked at (not processed) is now in the midst of being considered for approval. This means she can remain in the country even if she has to leave her husband, where before she was dependent on him as she's from another country and was on a partner visa. She is staying because she does not want to disrupt her son's life by uprooting him again, especially when he is now in a good school, has settled in and is doing well. He's only 13. I am still concerned for her safety but things are slowly coming together for her which is a real miracle in itself considering all that has been happening for the past year and a half since she moved here.

Emotional Outburst

Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not believe Me, to hallow Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.”Numbers 20:12

Numbers 20 marked the end of 38 years of wandering since Kadesh Barnea. For the second time, there was no water for the children of Israel. This time, not only did they blame Moses, they started blaming God, “If only we had died when our brethren died before the LORD!” (20:3). What a perverse lot! Actually, they should have already been in the Promised Land a long time ago, if only they themselves had not chosen to stay in the wilderness.

God then instructed Moses to “speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield its water” (20:8). The rock represented Christ (1 Cor. 10:4). The first time, God told Moses to “strike” the rock (Ex. 17:6). In striking the rock, it signified that Jesus had to be crucified. Christ was stricken, smitten and afflicted so that the waters of life could flow out to a thirsty and dying humanity. But the second time when the Israelites needed water, Moses was to speak to the rock. Now for us, living after the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ, all that is necessary is for us to speak and life flows. But Moses lost his temper and shouted at the people, “Hear now, you rebels! Must we bring water for you out of this rock?” (Num. 20:10). Likewise, we have no right to taunt, mock or rail at other people because the only thing that makes us different is the grace of God.

However, it can be challenging to control our temper when we are leading such perverse groups. So, we still need to monitor our emotions during times of stress and beware of the dangers of making decisions when we have low emotional reserves. Moses destroyed the prophetic type. By striking the rock twice, it would mean, in effect, that Christ would have to be crucified twice. Yet, notice the greatness of God in the next verse, “Water came out abundantly, and the congregation and their animals drank” (20:11). Even though God’s type had been destroyed and God’s servant had failed, God still caused the water to flow out. That was the grace of God despite human failure!

For Moses’ indiscretion and emotional outburst, he was disqualified from entering the Promised Land. Can you see the tremendous tests and standards God has for a leader? With privilege comes great responsibility. Just think of how Moses had served so tirelessly for 40 years. And then he was denied what was most precious to him—entrance into the Promised Land. In the Lord’s eyes, the measure of success is not the outcome of the effort, but the obedience of His servant.

The time to take a stand is now

Be Heard - I copied this from Lisa Shay's blog as I believe it is extremely important we take note of what is happening and act (not on human understanding but biblical principles) . I have signed the petition though I am not an American resident as his decision is against my convictions.

-------------

Took the following straight off of Jonalee's blog. It only takes a minute to read and be informed and then 15 seconds to sign the Petition. Please, let your voice BE HEARD.

"President Obama announced that he will remove the Conscience Clause.

Enacted by former President Bush, the Conscience Clause is meant to prevent discrimination against people based on their religious or moral beliefs and to protect health care workers who do not want to perform abortions.

We are actively defending the rights of pro-life physicians and nurses as they are being threatened by the new Administration. If President Obama makes this damaging move, if he reverses the Conscience Clause, pro-life doctors and nurses will be forced into performing abortion procedures, despite their individual beliefs.

To aggressively defend the freedom to act according to your conscience, we have launched the Be Heard Project. Visit http://beheardproject.com/ now, and sign the ''Petition to Protect Pro-Life Doctors.'' President Obama has given us 30 days to voice our concerns."

Please take 15 seconds to make your voice heard on this important issue!! I can't imagine being a doctor or nurse and being essentially forced to perform abortions.

Along these lines, President Obama also issued an executive order on Monday lifting the ban on federal funding of human embryonic stem cell research. What this means is that your tax dollars will now be used to pay for this. If you believe that life begins at conception as I do, this is extremely disturbing.

Please pray for our President. Proverbs 21:1, "The king's heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; He turns it wherever He will. " It is comforting to know that the Sovereign God is in control. Pray that He would have mercy and change President Obama's heart with regards to this issue.

Oh Boy

Colossians 3:12 "Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience"

I allowed myself to get really frustrated at work today. Lately it's been getting worse. The point, however, is not that there are more people exasperating me. The point is my reaction to the accumulation of these little events reveals something deeper, something more personal which I have to confront. My attitude. My willingness to control my own emotions. My character. I easily lose my cool. Not in front of the students but behind them, after they have left the room. I find myself thinking poorly of them for the expectations they place on me and their demands, for not following really simple instructions and rules set out in the handbooks provided but persisting in arguing against them.

I sometimes 'marvel' over the degree of their egoism. How many seem to think that they are the only student I look after, and that I am at their beck and call. It just 'amazes' me how bossy and arrogant and rude they can be. How ridiculous their justifications for insisting we "fix the situation" and bend all the rules just for them when they could have thought ahead and organised themselves better or recognised their responsibility in the matter. I get blamed when they fail a course though they clearly did not put in the appropriate amount of effort (yes, I get students telling me about their partying antics and nights spent playing computer games). I then get told I have to "sort the mess out" right away because the consequences are not "ideal".

It is not enough to respond to their email within the same day of them writing. It has to be addressed at the very second you receive it even if it has arrived after 50 other emails, some from students who are patient and understanding though they, on the other hand, have legitimate queries that need urgent attention. And so when you do not reply within their desired time frame, they will send you the same email 5 more times. Consecutively. Each with an additional exclamation mark in the title. And so you finally get to their email, only to discover that the request is unreasonable and at times senseless.

Case in point: Student contacts me repeatedly over a series of days as she has failed a course but does not want her graduation to be delayed. She is adamant about receiving an advanced standing for a course she has completed at a different institution but, after several attempts on my part to gain from her the necessary documents, she fails to respond and instead bombards me with other demands, which I address. Finally she changes her mind and goes away for some months, supposedly to focus on the remainder of her courses. Then one day she sends me 6 emails in a row. Her question that needed an answer like yesterday, which she also decided to harass other staff with since I did not get back to her immediately even though I was away and she received 6 automatically generated out-of-office replies to inform her of that, turns out to be unwarranted of such frenzy.

Student's email: "I want to have these (she lists them out) courses removed from my transcript. I want to take them again. Get back to me today on whether I can do this. It is very urgent! Today is the due date for enrolling" My response: "Dear ... Thank you for your email. The due date for enrolling in at least one course is the 27th of February (the day of my email to her being the 2nd) and the last date to add a course is the 13th of March (such details are widely broad casted). I'm afraid that once you have completed a course or been awarded credit for a course, you may not have this removed from your transcript. As you have passed the courses you listed, you may not repeat them. Moreover, you are now eligible to graduate from your program as you have passed the paper you deferred (which is what she wanted all along).

That is not on my list of aggravating situations though. The students I dealt with today really had me hitting my head against the wall. Don't get me started. It would do me (and you and them) no good to relay the incidents or dwell on them. But by the end of the day, I was venting to my colleagues. I must have looked pretty comical when explaining the situation in an animated fashion, complete with high-pitched gibberish as I muttered utter nonsense in my sheer frustration, as my colleagues started laughing. My manager looked at me with pity and said, "go home". I do not swear (use cuss words) but I do use words to describe people that I cannot be proud of. Words like "stupid", "dumb" and "retarded".

There is no justification for my attitude and behaviour. God would certainly not be laughing along with me or making the same comments. I need to learn to let all these small occurrences slide like water off a duck's back. I should not be regarding them so seriously and letting them affect me the way I have. God is certainly wanting me to learn humility, patience and grace. And how I keep failing each and every day to put His word into practice! Today's verse that I have attached above is a sharp reminder to me. A reminder to watch my anger because it is not something I have no control over. It is not a spirit that overtakes me but is an emotion I can actively manage.

Apathy

"...In the world it calls itself Tolerance; but in Hell it is called Despair. … It is the sin which believes in nothing, cares for nothing, seeks to know nothing, interferes with nothing, enjoys nothing, loves nothing, hates nothing, finds purpose in nothing, lives for nothing, and only remains alive because there is nothing it would die for...."

Dorothy Sayers

There are many things in life to which I have come to develop a sense of apathy. Though my heart mourns for women and children abused and for families torn apart, I have come to be numb towards those whose lives seem to be well on the surface. Worse, I have come to not care if those who bring pain to others' lives receive judgement. I have no concern for their end, no qualms of them living an eternity without God, no desire for their salvation. Which is scary if you really think about it. On the one hand, I cry out to God for Him to move in this world, to stop the violence, to not make me look upon injustice. On the other hand, He asks that I reach out to those I encounter daily and tell them of His existence and His goodness, and I decline the offer or shy away from any potential opportunity. The irony. One day I hope for my heart to love all people. Even those who seem to take a sick pleasure out of inflicting misery upon another. What will it take for God to bring about such a change in me? Will I need to be broken by such a person, only to be restored by God and compelled by His love and mercy towards me to extend forgiveness and grace? I dare not think. I look for hope. I long for peace. I struggle with truth. I wait for justice.

2 Peter 1: 5-9 "For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ"

Be yourself

"...Often we want to be somewhere other than where we are, or even to be someone other than who we are. We tend to compare ourselves constantly with others and wonder why we are not as rich, as intelligent, as simple, as generous, or as saintly as they are. Such comparisons make us feel guilty, ashamed, or jealous. It is very important to realize that our vocation is hidden in where we are and who we are. We are unique human beings, each with a call to realize in life what nobody else can, and to realize it in the concrete context of the here and now. We will never find our vocations by trying to figure out whether we are better or worse than others. We are good enough to do what we are called to do. Be yourself!..."

Henri Nouwen

the reason for knowing

"...There are some who long to know, simply for the sake of knowing, and that is shameful curiosity. Others long to know to show off before others, and that is shameful vanity. There are others who long for knowledge to make a fat profit from it, or to make honors from it; and this is shameful profiteering. But there are those who long to know in order to be of service to others; and this is charity..."

Bernard of Clairvaux

In need of You

I have distanced myself for so long
I've forgotten how to come back
My heart has wandered to many things
It's filled with a darkness so black
I look within and what lies there is fear
A lack of faith in one I used to know
My mind is busy and has no peace
Doubt and distraction each day I sow
It's been years since I've really felt You
Years since I've tasted such goodness
I am numb to my sin but torn by the world
I fight for my version of righteousness
I'm finding it so hard to draw near
I just want to be able to let you in again
Everything in this weary shell needs You
I want to make my devotion plain
I yearn for more of these quiet days
I think I will retrace my steps to You
But often the time is fruitless still
No focus just lost on what to do
Oh God I need a connection
My spirit has been so dry so dead
Where is the love the purpose the fire
Down paths of willfulness I've been led
Any closeness seems imagined there's no change
There is nothing of real value here
I wonder how long I will fall away
But Lord Your presence I long to hold dear

Till I see You by Hillsong United

The greatest love that anyone could ever know
That overcame the cross and grave to find my soul
And 'til I see You face to face and grace amazing takes me home
I'll trust in You

With all I am I'll live to see Your kingdom come
And in my heart I pray You'd let Your will be done
And 'til I see You face to face and grace amazing takes me home
I'll trust in You

I will live to love You
I will live to bring You praise
I will live a child in awe of You

You are the voice that calls the universe to be
You are the whisper in my heart that speaks to me
And 'til I see You face to face and grace amazing takes me home
I'll trust in You

You alone are God of all
You alone are worthy Lord
And with all I am my soul will bless Your name

Remember the time...

What a swell idea to remember God's faithfulness! Lisa, I hope you don't mind me putting this here...just thought we could all be reminded to take time to reflect on His goodness in our lives. Helps build our faith when the next big thing comes along to rush us, to topple us over, to threaten our stand. And another really Happy Anniversary to Lisa Shay (oh right, and husband too...yes ok, you may have some love as well) May God continue to knock you off your feet with His amazing presence, His unceasing love, indescribable grace and abundant provision and bless your marriage with each additional year! And thank God for your friendship!

My multi-racial family

That's my Uncle John (O'Rourke) on the far left with Sharmini's partner beside him. The lady in the mustard pants is Auntie Uffie (Elizabeth), his wife. My mum's in purple. My cousins are on the other end. There's John-Paul at the far right with his wife Belle and their second little girl. John-Paul is Auntie Uffie's oldest child and the only male cousin. Then there is Kay to my left in the photo, with her husband Michael behind. Their 3 daughters are in the front with John-Paul's first girl (the one hiding). Kay is Auntie Uffie's third child. Ann (who's number 2) couldn't make it with her family. Neither could Traccy (number 4). My dad's next to Fab and my sister and brother-in-law are in the front with my two nephews. The little Asian lady in front of Fab is Ah Hoon. She's looked after me since Day Three of being in this world, so much so that she's one of the family now. Don't mess with her, she runs our house. Her cooking is out of this world fabulous! She's totally the best! Of course that's not to say everyone else in my family isn't either! They're all super duper wonderfuller! Anyway, as you can see, the little ones got to be page boys and flower girls on the day.

Fascinating isn't it? How I don't look like them because their dads are Aussie. Actually I think Uncle John has Irish descent. This is of Pip, Sharmini and I - Pip is the youngest of 5 kids my mum's older sister (Auntie Uffie) has and Sharmini is my mum's younger sister's (Aunt Shanta) only child. My mum doesn't have any other siblings. It's just them 3 women. Auntie Shanta and her husband Uncle Clive attended the Singapore wedding dinner instead so Sharmini and Grant represented them in Brisbane. Pip (well, Philippa to be exact) is 3 years older than I and Sharmini (Lang) is 3 years younger than I. Maybe I should have stood in the middle. Notice the great dip in height. :) Ok, so a little background for those interested. Mum's dad is Indian and mum's mum is Eurasian. My Pa might have Peranakan descent. So when the entire clan gets together, we look like a huge bowl of salad. Thankfully no one is green in the family.

I love them, I love them all! You should come for the giant get to gethers. Grampa's side are all really musically inclined and super talented. There's a player for every instrument and a singer for every note. Food's always great and the company superb. I miss them...

Thank you to Xi Liu for the beautiful photos. I have yet to download them off Flickr. Whoops

Our God is faithful

Deuteronomy 7:9 - "Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commands."

Even though we may not see it at the time we are going through a tough situation, this does not change God's character. It does not make Him suddenly negligent. This is something I am still learning to grasp. I have experienced His faithfulness and undying love and amazing grace since I can recall yet I often wonder about why He does not seem to show that same faithfulness to others. Like when He does not protect another child from abuse. I'm learning to be convicted that He has a good purpose for everything. I'm reminded to see in terms of eternity. That the life we have now is just a dot in the midst of that. That God can press the "reset" button in a sense and at the end of the day, there will be no more tears and the wicked will not get to walk free from justice.

There are many times I feel alone in my walk with God - by that I mean alone in how I respond to what is going on in the world and what I desire of God to do about what I see happening in the world. Yet He reminds me that I am not alone. That there are others fighting the battle with me. The battle in the spiritual realm. To see people being set free from sin and wickedness, and healed from shame and guilt. Like Elijah. God had reserved 7000 (if memory serves me right) prophets who had not bowed down to Baal in idol worship, and so He was assuring Elijah that he was not alone.

On my way to work some days ago, I came to a halt on the highway due to jam-packed peak hour traffic. I can't remember what Fab was doing at the time but I looked out the window and saw two wooden sticks that had fallen to form a cross beside some rubbish in the gutter. I looked at the dirty, rain-soaked cross and felt prompted with the question, "How many people are there who have neglected God in their lives, thrown Him to the wayside and filled their lives with idols instead? How many times have you put God on the shelf and gone on with your life without including Him in your major decisions, without keeping your relationship with Him a priority, without letting Him be Lord of your life? If God is not Lord of all, He is not Lord at all" Something to think about...

12 March 2009 - Was driving into work today thinking about this post that I felt prompted to write. The question in my mind was, "God is faithful, but are we?" I've included this photograph my mum sent. You would have heard about the terrible fires in Victoria. My church has been praying, ever since they started, for God to bring restoration to this land. This picture serves as a reminder to ask our faithful God of love and grace to heal this land, to bring that drop of refreshment so needed by many. May this be a turning point in their lives, that they may experience His goodness and provision and not live far from Him. One good thing I see when tragedies like this occur - the people within that community eventually show their true colours. Most will rush to the aid of others. Unity is built and relationships formed where previously fences and gates and tall brick walls were barriers between families residing side by side. Where a complete lack of communication, apart from perhaps the formal disengaged nod of acknowledgement, sufficed, a mutual comradeship now exits. It's touching to see how others will go out of their way to help a neighbour or how others unaffected will rally around their fellow countrymen and sacrifice their time, effort and even safety to extend that hand. We can do our part in the society around us. In practical ways such as what was shown by the fire fighters and those giving community aid. We can also stand in the gap for them on our knees in prayer. They may not see how that does anything but we know the power. We know His faithfulness as we cry out to Him in unison.

Praise be to God

2 Corinthians 1: 3-4 "[The God of All Comfort] Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God."

Have Israel Houton's voice ringing in my head, "Praise be to God" - I can't really recall the exact lyrics but it's about God overcoming and causing us to triumph in His name.

Thank You, God. You knew I needed Your comfort and grace once again. You have been encouraging me and strengthening me. I thought you would have rebuked me for letting myself be negligent towards You, for losing focus and not having faith, because without faith it is impossible to please You. Yet You are still patient with me. Long suffering. You don't have to be. You could have taken all the short cuts right from the start to save this world. You could have not allowed us free will and simply controlled everything from the outset. But You have allowed us to make our own choices. To learn from our experiences, both good and bad. You have given us room to think, room to reason, room to decide and room to grow. You have even invited us to be companions, to listen to Your heart. You have entrusted us, mere humans, with great and wondrous revelations and plans, according to our readiness and willingness to just sit with You and listen, and obey. You have taken the time to communicate at our level, time to guide, to impart, to nurture, to build up, to deepen a relationship, to teach and correct, to encourage and comfort, to bless, to love.

A Season for Everything

Ecclesiastes 3 tells us there is a time for everything. What season are you in right now? For us here at the Gold Coast, we're preparing for the harvest. We're getting ready for the new semester, the orientation period which starts tomorrow, and the days to follow where we'll be actively organising activities for students to join us. We pray that we may build new friendships and reach out to those looking for a church, looking for assistance with settling in, looking for a network of friends in an unfamiliar land, looking for a message of hope. We want to be an impact to the community. There is so much lined up for just the next couple of months. At a time like this, spiritual opposition is usually very strong and we have already started to experience a little of the warfare. As Belle says, in response to us wanting to advance the kingdom of God, "the devil will come out to play, but (as we trust and pray and do our part), God will have His way"

For us this is our season to focus. To make the main thing the main thing and not let Satan and his minions throw distractions, discouragement and deception our way. We have seen this happen many times and need to be quick to recognise it and remain strong in God's Word, and of course take good care of our health and manage our time well...practical every day things. At times like this, you often see people falling ill, getting tired and even burning out, or they start going through a variety of difficult situations. I've already mentioned how some are facing the critical condition of a loved one, another has lost someone. It's easy for disillusionment to set in, for various ones to begin to waiver in their faith and slowly disengage themselves from the group. Separating us is a common ploy. When we get caught up in our own issues and isolate ourselves, we leave ourselves open for more attack. We may even begin to judge or resent the others or feel excluded or like no one can really understand and they don't really care.

I've been through that. I fell into depression for a period of several months and struggled. Then one day, God spoke life into me again. One of the women leaders in the church came forward to pray for me. She didn't ask me any questions and had no idea what I had been going through yet after waiting upon the Lord, she said to me, "It's like you've been going through a season of extreme dryness. It's been about 3 months now...God wants to encourage you that He will bring you out of this season. He will refresh and renew you and you will see restoration..." I believe that time of my life was necessary to shape something in me. I was nearing the end of my counselling course with a Christian college. One of my lecturers brought us through a session where he asked us to face our own inner person, to confront what was deep inside of us because his theory was, "if you do not learn to first counsel yourself, you cannot be free to fully counsel another as you may otherwise bring your own baggage, biases, expectations, preconceived notions etc to the table". I didn't think it would really lead to anything but the time he gave us to just quietly reflect and ponder, as he guided us with carefully phrased questions and prompts, brought to the surface emotions and pain I had somehow repressed. I did not know their origin but began to sob. He gave each of us a blank piece of paper to draw or write what we were experiencing or thinking or whatever we wanted to express. My sheet filled with rather dark images and negative words. That was the start to my depression.

I cried like never before. At the drop of a hat. for no apparent reason. Everything overwhelmed me. Every piece of assessment I had to do, every responsibility I had in church, every relationship. I would cry all the way to college while driving. I'd cry myself to sleep. I'd lock myself in the car and scream at the top of my lungs. I couldn't sleep. Then I hit a point where I dreaded being awake and facing another day. I tried to pray, to keep reading the Bible, to do all the things I knew to be "right". I tried to keep up with my work and with ministry. Somehow God gave me enough strength to carry these things through but slowly I began isolating myself from others. I was sick and tired of their textbook answers, of them asking me, "well have you prayed?", or telling me, "just think about something else". None of that was working for me and I couldn't understand why. I was hurt.

For months before that class we had at college, I was living with a person who was angry and bitter and had begun to hate me and hate church and her life. Day after day I had to face her negative attitude and loud angry words and door slamming. It was a hostile environment. She was once a very close friend but a series of events destroyed that. I praise God for bringing restoration to that relationship eventually though things will never be the same as they were when we were close. Another dear friend had been going through difficult times and for months I listened and tried to be the best support I could. I prayed for her and spent time with her. Perhaps in some ways, I failed to draw strength from God and let it subtly drain me. Then came the character assassination. It was a slow accumulation of comments, accusations, judgements, advice. I was held responsible for the actions of others because I was supposed to be setting a better example. Somehow I had let my leaders and those under my care down. I felt misunderstood and was shocked at what I was told. Nothing of who I was or what I did seemed good enough to please everyone. A couple of months before everything came crashing down, I started to face relationship issues too. Fab and I had grown closer in our friendship but though we knew it was not the right timing, we didn't pull away as much as we should have. Boundaries became blurry and our leaders were disappointed though they never said so but gently rebuked us and kept persuading us to do the right thing. It came to a point though that I felt he was the only one really standing by me, accepting me fully and not criticising or correcting or trying to change me. But because of the strain and distance between us from having to not stumble very young believers and to give ourselves room to grow individually before it was time to pursue anything further, I felt even more alone.

One day I finally lost the plot and broke down in church after snapping very loudly at someone who kept asking if I was "OK". I'm so thankful that God picked me off the floor when He did. I was worried I would never really recover. I felt so lost and trapped within myself. I couldn't end my life as I did not want to face hell and I had kept telling myself that it was all very illogical anyway. Nothing was really all that wrong. I probably just brought it all upon myself or was just seriously deluded. There was no real reason to be so down, to have no strength left in me. But why was I still crying? Why were the words in the Bible not making an inch of sense or penetrating the depths of my weary soul? Why was the advice of others making me so angry? God came to my rescue. It may sound so dramatic to anyone else but at that time I couldn't make head or tail of what I was going through. I could reason things out with my head but the rest of me was not following. I chastised myself, made myself spend more time listening to praise songs, reading the Bible, praying to God. But as I felt worse and worse each waking moment, my hope went down the drain and my will to keep on hid itself from me.

Over the years, I've still battled greatly in my mind. My relationship with God has never fully returned to what it used to be when I was growing steadily in my walk with Him before the year depression hit like a ton of bricks (maybe some form of wake up call). I've forgotten how to enter that secret place but God has been calling me to draw near. He has not forsaken me but keeps encouraging and beckoning. I need Him. I really do need Him. Since getting married, I have faced new fears and some old ones have increased with the news of daily occurrences around the world. Again I find myself losing grip. Losing focus. Losing faith. My past posts would show a glimpse of this week's frenzy. I broke down in prayer meeting yesterday morning and again when sharing with Belle. She's such a great listener and speaks words of life into you each and every time. Though she has been through so much, she has overcome and found God's faithfulness and goodness to be true. He has moulded her character and taught her utter dependence on Him for her own benefit. I know I always try to control my own life and what goes on around me. But God is the only one who is truly sovereign. Control needs to be given to Him so He can bring about the best for us.

Now as i sit here consolidating my thoughts and reflecting, I see that the devil has been toying with me this whole time and I have let him. I have let him rob me of joy, peace and purpose. I have allowed him to render me totally useless as I fall into a heap weeping. But it's time to pull together and charge ahead, not pull back and retire. There is no time to be lost on depressive thoughts, on distractions. Satan will tempt us with the "permissible". A little time here in front of the TV, a little time there taking a nap, busyness in our minds here over the laundry and house cleaning, busyness there over work and children (if you have any). All the while, we lose sight of what our priorities should be. We forget that God has deposited much into our hearts, minds, spirits and lives to impart. To share with our children, to share with our friends and family. To proclaim in the blog world :)

The harvest is ready. But the workers are few. We need to focus on what is "beneficial" not just "permissible". We cannot afford to entertain distractions, discouragement and deception. We need to meditate on the truth. When I was going through those months of being really down, I must have done everything out of some form of routine. Perhaps God needed me to grow increasingly desperate in my pursuit of Him so that I would not live a life of mediocrity. I have lagged these past few years. I have let the important things fall to the wayside. I have neglected my "first love". It's time to get back on track. Thank you for staying with me on this journey. Thank you for encouraging me. God has blessed me with such beautiful new friends all the way over in America. Special thanks to Ashley, Lisa, Darlene, Debra and Marie. Special thanks to Charis, Belle and Tom as well for your encouraging little notes. We need quality friendships. To stay by one another as we fight this fight together, run this race together, shine for Christ together...good friends lovingly speak into our lives, and "It is far better to have the rebuke of a true friend than the kiss of an enemy". Thank you to my wonderful husband. Darling, I love you. Most of all, thank you God. I want You to be my reason for living because I wouldn't be here if You had not thought me up because You wanted me here. Because You adore me as Your beloved child, the same way You do every single person on this earth.

Faith is not a Feeling

Just in case you don't read Lisa Shay's response to my last post, here it is below because it's something we can all apply to our lives and should. Thank you Lisa, I needed this strong reminder. Thanks for taking the time to share this with me. It's hard sometimes to keep believing when all you see are the circumstances but God has always been incredibly faithful to my family and myself. I cannot afford to lose my grip on His truth.

Jos, I'm leaving you an excerpt from the book I'm reading. It's my Saturday morning Bible Study. It's been awesome. I know I've told you that before, but it really is amazingly filled with incredible truths of our capable, loving and unbelievable God.

"Loving God with All Your Mind" by, Elizabeth George

Here it goes:

Chapter 19

"We know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those called according to His purpose." Rom. 8:28

The women from our church were crowded into a large conference room for our annual retreat. We were meeting at the headquarters of Campus Crusade for Christ which, at the time, was in Arrowhead Spring, CA. Our speaker was Ney Bailey from their staff, and I still remember the story she told that first evening--a story that I read again later in her book, Faith Is Not A Feeling...

One quiet summer day, Ney was meeting in the Colorado Rocky Mountains with 35 other women leaders from Campus Crusade. Suddenly sirens broke the peaceful stillness and megaphones barked, 'Evacuate immediately! Flash flood coming! Evacuate immediately!'

The women immediately got into their cars and left. As they crossed over a bridge, the realized the urgency of the situation when the raging waters cascading down the mountain washed away the bridge they had just driven over! Continuing on, the women traveled to a fork in the road, got out of their cars, asked for directions, jumped back into the cars, and drove on.

Ney Bailey's care went one way, and another car went a different way. Tragically, the seven women in the other car drowned. Not knowing of her friends' deaths, Ney and her companions huddled together in prayer once their car reached higher ground. With the authority of Scripture under-girding her, she began praying, "Lord, Your Word says, 'In everything give thanks, because this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning us.' So while we are in this, we choose with our wills to thank You.

"And Lord, Your Word says, 'All things'--including this--'work together for good to those who love You'--and we do--'and are called according to Your purpose'--and we are.

"You have also said that heaven and earth will pass away before Your Word passes away. So Your Word is truer than anything we are feeling or experiencing right now."

Faith is not a feeling, and Ney lived out that truth in the situation I just described. Despite whatever she was feeling--panic, fear, worry--Ney chose to put her faith in God and the truths of His Word and not in her feelings. As her prayer reveals, she turned to God and clung to the promises found in His Word when her feelings and thoughts might have run wild. Ney Bailey's prayer taught me 3 lessons I have tried to apply in my own Christian life.

1. Pray "Your Word says..."--Ney showed me how to pray using the authority of Scripture. I saw right away the value of praying "Your Word says...," of letting God's truth guide my petitions. Now, whenever I counsel a woman who needs help praying about difficult issues, I share Ney's prayer with her and tell her to pray God's Word.

2. Pray the truth of Rom. 8:28--Ney's prayer taught me how to use the truth of Rom. 8:28 concerning my life. Following her model, I now pray, "God, Your Word says 'all things', including this _____ (and I fill in the blank, naming my present problem)--'work together for good.'" The simple exercise of "filling in the blank" forces me to acknowledge God's involvement in my life and reminds me that He is the source of my strength and hope.

3. Pray to be faith oriented--This prayer taught me that I can never view my life through the lens of feelings. They are too varied and unstable! No, I must be faith oriented rather than feeling oriented. Faith is not a feeling. Faith looks to God and trusts Him to work out the present difficulty for His purposes and my good. I must look to God and to His Word--and to Rom. 8:28!--and I must remember that He will indeed work all things for my good!

As we're continuing to learn, God is in complete control of every aspect of our lives. Furthermore, He promises to work "all things" for our good and His purposes. We can definitely have hope in Him and put our God-given faith in Him.

For the Lord your God is with you

I had another weird breakdown yesterday on the way home. Just burst into tears over things weighing upon my mind and bawled in the car for a while. There have been quite a number of negative events occurring to people around me and I've just been emotionally affected by them, which is pretty ironic considering I'm not the one going through the pain and so should be God's messenger of hope, joy and peace. But I was a wreck after speaking with a friend who had just lost someone precious to her. She admitted to her raw emotions but was quick to claim God's goodness and find the positives. She is clinging to her faith in God and believes God is going to use this trial to make her stronger and enable her to identify with others who are hurting because of a similar experience. That kind of faith, that kind of decision to keep trusting is amazing. She even prayed with me, can you imagine! What an encourager! A great example of a godly woman.

I think I just feel overwhelmed by everything that is happening. I feel like I can't pray fast enough or hard enough to cover everyone and everything. I think I've been trying to carry burdens or responsibilities that are not mine to bear. I should be giving everyone and everything to God, not trying to shoulder their grief and make their pain go away. I can't. Only God can.

This morning as I stepped into the bathroom, a Sunday School song popped into my head and I clapped my hands and uttered, "be bold, be strong, for the Lord your God is with you. Be bold, be strong, for the Lord your God is with you. I am not afraid. No, no, no, I am not dismayed. I'm gonna walk in faith and victory, come on and walk in faith and victory, for the Lord your God is with you!" If you know the tune, sing along with me! I had forgotten this for so long. It was good to just remind myself. I should be making the main thing the main thing. I must not lose sight of Christ. His redemptive work on the cross. He died that there would always be enough for us.

Father, please be with every single one of my friends who are hurting. Please bring healing and comfort. Please flood their hearts and minds with Your truth, Your peace, Your joy to be their strength. Some of them have family members who have recently been diagnosed with cancer, or a family member who has had a stroke, or a terrible car accident that has caused much bleeding and damage in the brain. Others are being physically abused by their husbands but cannot get out because the situation has become so complicated and little ones need to be protected in the midst of all this. Father, please make a way out for them. There has been great loss and physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual trauma. Lord, only You can lift them up, cause their spirits to be able to praise You even in the midst of these difficult times. Only You Lord can bring complete restoration and give them such hope for what is to come. Only You make our uncertain future sure with Your plans that proper us, not harm us. Lord, please speak into their broken hearts and mend their weary bodies. May they always feel Your presence to know they are not abandoned to their circumstances, but have a Father who is very lovingly watching over them. A Father who is in control of everything and is able and wants to bring the best to His children. Thank You for being such a Father to us. May we always place our lives in Your hands. We give You our minds, our hearts, our hands. We give all of us that You may bring about Your good, perfect and pleasing will and purpose.

(Deuteronomy 6)

**You CAN make a difference!**

This is how. So many women across the world are seriously trapped in the porn industry or in the sex trade. And it's not because they have entered it willingly or because they enjoy any of what takes place. Many endure rape, abuse of different forms, the terrible effects of drugs, shame and disgust and horrendous sexually transmitted diseases. And they SHOULD NOT HAVE TO. I used to think that porn stars were degrading themselves, that they were fully aware of what they were doing and that they had chosen this path. But those are just lies. Behind what one sees clicking through those perverted sites, there are real women suffering. And we think they can just walk away but many cannot escape because of the painful consequences they will face if they try to. Please, I really urge you to take this seriously. I'm going to get myself involved somehow. I have to. I have to see this nightmare end for these women and young girls.

God's encouragement

God has been so gracious in giving me words of encouragement these past couple of days, particularly since my breakdown on Tuesday. I've been rather depressed for a while now and there are days where I just feel more overwhelmed. And it makes no sense at all because I have always had a wonderful life. Many would be so envious and chide me for being so immature and ridiculous. And that would be a very logical response. Still, there are things I just can't get my head around and they upset me. They eat away at what little faith I have, what little confidence, little resolve. I don't think I'm ready for the answers and I guess it's irrelevant whether I receive them or not, so God reminded me once again that "His thoughts are not my thoughts and His ways not my ways. That His are higher..." I used to find this one hard to swallow and in some ways still do. Because it's not enough, or so I argue. It just seems to be His excuse for everything. But the truth of the matter is, He really is way beyond me. So I can't try to reason His intentions with my limited understanding of situations and His character. I can't fit Him into a box, label Him, find some fixed method of analysing His words and actions.

Today as I slip farther into my downward emotional spiral, He says to me, "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go" (Joshua 1:9). God has brought me to this passage many times over the years yet I have not grasped hold of it. I'm comforted that despite my incessant yelling and accusing, that He is patiently reaching out to me and speaking sense into my frazzled mind.

I appreciate the kinds words various ones have given me. I have a feeling I may have freaked everyone out with Tuesday morning's post since no one responded to that one in particular. Somehow I'm struggling with putting the one on not worrying into practice but I can't expect there to be overnight progress when addressing years and years of fears, insecurities and resentment. I hope the passages will bring you comfort if you are going through a difficult time and are wondering why it has to be so hard or why sometimes it seems so unfair and unbalanced - the way some never know pain and others suffer tremendously. I will try to cling to the thought that God will never give us more than He will enable us to bear.

Oh, thank you for the compliments on the wedding photos too :)

Worry wastes away life

I'm working on trying to fill my mind with the truth of God instead of the thoughts that consume me and make me incapable of living with freedom and of bringing God's freedom to others. Just listened to the first sermon (Devotion Emotion) in a three-part series on Worrying by Andy Stanley, and I'd like to share it with you. When you click on the link provided, search through until you come to the picture of a turquoise square with two interlinking shapes.

What he says is so true, our worry is attached to what we are most devoted to in life. If we are devoted to being financially stable and providing a secure future for our family, and making sure that our children have the best in life, and that we are able to retire by a certain age, then our emotion of worry is most likely related to these areas. If we are concerned with what we are going to do with our lives especially if we are facing cross roads at the moment, than we will worry about this. But he asks, "are any of these individual things life? Does life equate to our health, our safety, our retirement plans?" Maybe we might think it does. Maybe we will say it equates to the summary of these things. But the scripture in Matthew 6: 24-34 suggests that we are myopic, that we have become hyper focused on these areas and have lost sight of the true big picture. I am hoping to discover more of what God sees and knows to be the big picture - His definition of what life really is.

Good point to note: Do not worry does not mean do not care. We still need to be responsible and do all we can with what we do have control over. But it does mean that after we have done so, we can sit back and trust that God will pull all other details together - the things we do not have control over. "Do your best and God will do the rest" (My mum's favourite phrase)

I need to see how I can apply this to worrying about protection and security when others out there are not even safe in their own homes. I could be one of those people but God placed me in a loving, Christian home with parents who have provided everything I could ever need. Do I believe that since He was willing and able to do all He has done so far and has been what He has been all this while, that He will continue to do so? Despite the fact that I may not be able to see that God is doing this for other people? I want them to have what I have. I want them to be loved and cared for and to have hope and a future without harm.

It's 3pm and I've finished the series. It's easy to take down the notes, to know that the sermons I hear are for me. But it is even easier not to do anything about where I'm at in life. I need to put the principles into practice. I need to pray and seek God on how I can live out these principles to see a change in my attitude, my character, my thinking, my perspective, my relationship with others, my stewardship, my life as a whole.

I stayed home today as I have not been feeling all that great. My body is very sore and my head has been heavy and spinning and my throat started getting that inflamed glands kind of sensation with the scratchiness. Quite a few of my colleagues have glandular fever and have been unwell since early last year even. Illness seems very common in my workplace. I think the bugs get trapped in the air conditioning vent and keep circulating. Anyway, I've actually been doing really well considering. Yes, you may attribute my ailments to a lack of exercise and possibly even my diet. Will need to pray for my colleagues because even the fit and health conscious are being hit hard. It's been a rather productive day so far, with keeping and washing more laundry, spending time crying out to God, listening to His Word, cooking a pot of soup for dinner (I love the thermal cooker my mum bought me!). Dinner preparation can start late since Fab won't reach the station until 8:30 tonight. Shall try to work on scripture memorising now.

Father, Father...

Job 23: 10-11 "But He knows the way that I take; when He has tested me, I will come forth as gold. My feet have closely followed His steps; I have kept to His way without turning aside."

Father, I am greatly burdened. Lord, where are You at this present moment. We need You Lord. We need You. We have made a mess of Your beautiful creation, we have done terrible things, we have grieved You deeply. Father, please do not hide Your face from us, do not keep Your love and protection away from Your children. Father forgive us for our wretchedness, for our gross sins.

Lord Jesus, save those who cannot fend for themselves. Do not let the wicked walk free any longer. God, while Fab was away for work last night, I awoke in the middle of the night with a strong fear that someone would break into the house and hurt me. My heart was afraid and I called out to You for Your peace and assurance of Your presence with me. I asked that my home would be a safe haven. That You would always watch over Fab, our families, our friends and us. My mind wandered still, Lord, and I thought of cowering in fear in the wardrobe, I contemplated arming myself with kitchen knives. Should I get dressed, I wondered. I went out of my room to check the doors, to scan our home, to look out onto the driveway and neighbouring streets, wary of the terrors of the night. There was nothing but my mind and heart could not rest. I climbed back into bed with Your Word and I tried to learn Your scriptures to keep my mind fixed on You but I struggled. I did not get very far, I was still shaking. I continued to call out to You. Eventually I stood up to turn off the lights and sleep came over me. One more time of waking. More praying and finally I made it through the night. I thank You for this.

But Father, this morning on the news, I read that a 24-year old man broke into a home last November and raped a 4-year old child. He even confessed in court that he had sexual intercourse with a child under 10. They had found his DNA on some clothing in the home and arrested him days after the terrible event. But the man was allowed to walk away free. Why Father? Why have so many men been allowed to return to their lives unscathed after having committed such a crime? They must gloat to themselves. It must give them and others like them the strength to keep destroying others. Why Father have You not sided with the children, with the women? Why have You not been the voice of those who have no say in this world? Why have You not protected those who are physically weaker or disabled? Father, I know Your grace is for all, I know You ask that I not harbour judgement towards these men, that You watch over them because You want them to be reconciled to You, You want them to have the chance to be saved too. You ask that I ask for forgiveness for my poor attitude. But Father, what about the children, what about the women?

I have known a physical pain I never thought I would experience. I was consenting. I kept myself for my husband. But still the pain was at times rather unbearable, and it was there for months. Even today I experience discomfort. And there are times I feel empty and disheartened. Father, if I can cry for myself, how much more do I cry for those who were not willing, who were forced to endure a pain so excruciating, maybe even over and over and over again, over many years of their lives. I weep as I type because my heart is so broken for the children and the women. I weep so often because I think of how their pain would be inconceivably greater. It's not just the physical pain but the emotional and mental torment. The crushing shame, the paralysing fear, the choking sense of disgust.

Father, I am so sorry I accuse You. I am so sorry I have failed to trust. I am so sorry that there were times You spoke to me, You beckoned me to intercede in some way or act upon something but I did not recognise Your voice and I did not respond. But please Father, do not let my mistakes and sins be the cause of another's pain. I cannot bear it if another has to pay for my wrongs. Please extend Your forgiveness to me Lord. My heart is weary. I cry out to You day and night for the children, for the women. My strength drains from me each time I read of another horrible case of abuse. I cannot pray as quickly as all these things are taking place and I feel so broken for this inadequacy. I feel I have let them down Oh Lord. I have not stood in the gap enough for You to have saved them. I am so sorry Father. I have not called out to You enough because I have been lazy and I have chosen to turn to worldly pleasures to block out the haunting thoughts. I have not prayed in the right way but have turned to You in anger and resentment many a times. I have not made myself right before You. I have harboured judgement and a lack of love. I have criticised. I have gossiped. I have grumbled and complained and been lazy. Lord, I know You do not condemn. I am not condemning myself but I want to confess of my sins before You. They are many and I cannot afford for them to hinder my walk with You any longer. I cannot allow myself to be hampered because I need to do Your work. I need to fight for the children, for the women. I need to fight for the men who love their families, who break their backs and give of their lives so their wives and children may live to see another sunrise.

I want to be strong Lord. I must not lose another minute because there are so many out there who are hurting so much. So many children and women carry terrible secrets - years of sexual abuse, years of bullying, years of torment over having done something they were made to think was worthy of death. Father, so many do not know they have a God they can call out to. You show Yourself in so many ways but Father they do not know how to recognise You. They do not know Father because the pain is so great. And they are crushed each day and every single night. They are woken in their slumber by a sharp pain. They are bruised, pressed down from every side and all they can do is lie there and hope for it to end, but it never seems to. That is not living. Father, they cannot go on like this. I cannot go on like this. With each story, the images flood my mind and throughout the day I revisit their stories. I weep when I am alone because I can only express myself fully to You. People might think I am crazy but I am pleading for others to join me because I cannot do this alone anymore. They need our prayers. Father, please assure me that You are moving. Even if showing me means I am lacking in faith and that I am asking to see to believe, would You humour me because I just feel so hopeless sometimes. And I need so much, Lord, to know that things are not getting worse but that my prayers are making a difference.

Father, if You are testing me in my faith, I have failed. But, I do desire to have the same attitude as Job. To make the decision to say that You know the way that I can take and after all this, I will be refined. I want to be able to say I did not walk away from You because of my discouragement, because of this great burden and fears. I want to keep to Your Word that I may do as You desire of me - be that salt and light to those around me.

In cowering, in weeping and accusing and seeking denial, I have become inefficient. I have lost the love for those who are immediately around me. I have not reached out to them. To my colleagues, to the students I have encountered. So many lives You have placed before me but I have neglected them because I have allowed my mind to be weighed down by this burden. And so I have not lived out Your love to those I see everyday. And they need You just as much. They have been through their own pain, their own struggles and suffering and now many of them have hearts that are hard. They need You just as much. Forgive me Lord for neglecting them. I want to be compelled by Your love. I want to walk in Your power and not in my own understanding and small measure of strength. Instead of grumbling and complaining about the students whom I find frustrating, I should be praying for their salvation. For if they really knew You, they would not just live for themselves or be drowned by expectations placed on them by their families. They will find that You are the source of everything they need. Even I am egoistic, even I am self centred. Yet I have You. They do not know You. Naturally they would live to protect themselves, meet their desires and interests. How could I judge them and not myself? For what else would they live for apart from what they know, apart from what they can see? Some choose to think the entire world revolves around them. They are rude and demanding and do not care who they tread on to excel. Some will live for the sake of those they love. Others will extend their circle of influence to bless communities and even nations if it is within their power to do so. How much more should I, with You calling and guiding and equipping and enabling and empowering, go out to draw lives to You so that they may be saved and healed and restored and cared for.

my own misgivings

The first thing I read this morning was a news article about a 9-year old girl in Brazil who has been found to be carrying twins. She is 4 months pregnant as a result of repeated sexual abuse from her 23-year old step father. The little girl was admitted to hospital due to suffering bad stomach pains and to the horror of the doctors, she was found to be with children. The step father apparently started abusing her when she was 6 and paid her an equivalent of 77 Australian cents each time. He also abused her 14-year old sister who was disabled.

Needless to say, I felt completely disgusted at the man's acts. A child's innocence, their hope, their future, their joy, and their life cannot be purchased by anything but the very cleansing blood of Jesus. And Jesus paid for our sins that we might live. This man was trying to pay for the girl's body with a meagre 77 cents each time he took everything, not just her chastity, away from her. Again I turned to God with angry words and questions. I remembered two specific cases that I had read about quite some time ago. One was of a girl of similar age who was raped by a mob of men in her village. The other was of a woman raped by a notorious gang in Sydney. In both cases, the judge eventually ruled that the victims had invited and consented to the sexual transactions. What was even more horrendous was in the second case, the woman had to endure a trial that was prolonged over a period of many years. Can you imagine how much pain she would have been in, particularly each time she had to revisit the ordeal and face the very people who had robbed her of her life in the courtroom? They finally dismissed the case because some person in the medical profession came forward with claims that the victim experienced an orgasm during the sexual encounter. How outrageous! It made my blood boil. I was worried that people would turn to say that the 9-year old girl in Brazil was consenting to the acts because she was receiving money. Please Lord, protect and heal her.

There was even a case in India where a patient brutally raped one of the nurses on night duty and gorged out one of her eyes. Despite repeated surgery, her injury did not heal. During the court case, her assailant had the cheek to tell the judge that the woman should marry him as she was now defiled, a disgrace to her family and society and that no one would want her. The judge put the offer forward to the woman, agreeing that she had no prospects left. Please Lord, stand for those who are not given a voice.

My mind was racing, my heart about to leap out of my chest. I picked up my daily devotional book and forced myself to focus on reading Oswald Chamber's writings for the month of February. I had missed a few days of reading from letting myself put other things first, like sleep, time with friends, the television, negative thinking that drowned me. I've included two of these readings below as they speak directly to my lack of faith, to my misgivings about God. The lies that God is not really in control of everything and that His plans are not truly the best for everyone. I must remember that God sees the sin of these men the same way he sees mine. If I, a sinful being, can feel such deep disgust, such overwhelming rage towards fellow men, how much more does God detest the sin within me. He is perfect, holy, blameless and pure. He cannot stand sin, cannot be within a mile from it. He allows these men to live because in His grace He desires that one day, they too will be reconciled to Him, that they will turn from their wickedness and begin to bring His love to those who need it. Perhaps one day they will reach out to men who struggle with sexual immorality and bring them to their knees in repentance, so that entire communities may see a revival. Families will then be restored, nations will then prosper because people will stop living for themselves, their selfish ambitions and desires. We will see a world ruled by justice and morality, not greed and lust. Please Lord, bring revival in every nation. Expose the hidden sins, expose the black markets and the sex trade for what they are, demolish everything that sets itself against what is founded on true love and holiness. May we be so aware of what sin has done and is doing, and may we want to have nothing to do with it any longer.

I must remember that God is Almighty. And that He is good. Even if He allows such pain to exist, even if he lets me experience such pain, knowing it will cause me to mature. I must remember He has already planned out how these children and women and even men who are being abused across the world are going to be healed and made whole. It is so hard but I want to trust. I want to believe. I don't want to fear the things He is going to bring into my life and that of the ones I hold dear.

We have to fight. We have to fight this warfare on our knees. Our enemy, our battle is not of flesh and blood. It is spiritual and we need to pray, intercede, stand in the gap. Yes, we also need to act physically and go out there and bring God's love in a practical way in which people can relate to it but we cannot do one and not the other. One hits the foundation, the other addresses the pain that has already been caused. Please join me. I cannot do this alone.
