3 of my colleagues and I, under the suggestion of one of them, went out of the office building to have lunch in the sun today. After a brief discussion, it was decided we would go sit out by the pond facing the waterfall and mini bridge. A lovely sight of Jacaranda flowers covering the grassy slope where the little rest stop sat greeted us. "This is nice...", one said and we sat down, only to be disappointed by a sudden blast of noise from some form of construction work taking place across the pond.
Right, so we moved over to another area where we sat slightly squashed on a wooden bench underneath a large shady tree facing a second pond. All went somewhat well and we even amused ourselves with feeding one of those lizards that look funny when they run. He was most harmless and grateful for the little pieces of bread and strips of salad he was getting. But then the birds arrived. First this awkward looking black one with a longish neck, tiny head and thin red beak. I think he was slightly blind as he inadvertently picked up the lizard's tail whilst trying to grab the piece of fallen lettuce. Then came his shorter friend who was pretty much of the same design. He kept to himself though so wasn't a nuisance. The ones who posed to be pests were the crows that chose to follow the growing crowd. The worst one was the crow who thought it was a fabulous to park himself on the branch above us and give his black coat a good shake! Yes, that's right! So we got nicely sprayed with pond water! Let me tell you, that scum and poo and pee and horrible rotting things filled pond smells to high heavens if the wind blows in the wrong direction so imagine getting droplets of the vile liquid on your arm! So we made a quick exit after two of the girls squealed.
As we were heading back, we spotted a trio of giant fat geese waddling up the path where some fashion icons scurried about with their faces to the ground to pick any tasty morsels of food scraps. Fashion icons - I wish I had a camera with me. These short, fat birds have the face of those hens in Wallace and Gromit but sport layered jackets of black with closely printed little white polka dots. Fascinating stuff, I tell you. Well, going back to the geese. All was well until some plump lady let out a shriek, hitched up her tight knee-length skirt, flung her sandwich forward and made a dash up the Jacaranda-covered slope. Turns out the geese were very much enticed by her lunch, but for some reason did not see it being thrown their way, and kept running after her, beaks wide open, necks lunging forward, squawks all in chorus. They're crazy. And evil. Every one of those pond scum smelling birds!
